Again it was a routine day started with a little bit of excitement and enthusiasm. Excitement was about accomplishing nothing and the tiny amount of enthusiasm was not very promising that accomplishments could come easily. But then somehow reached the class exactly at time and felt a little surge of happiness mixed with bewilderment. The first class was of political science, so I thought it’s going to be worth time spending in those four ‘walls of separation’. The topic for the day was UTILITARIANISM, seemingly hard and stern and stiff but turned out to be simple and then catching my imagination as a lion without proper teethes.
Utilitarianism is a kind of synonym to consequent driven system. A system generally where majority is seen as a valid and upright thing to do things. The idea behind this is to make maximum people happy and that’s it. If it’s only about making ourselves happy then how we will see the problems of others and spare some time to think about our future generations? So are we just thinking about ourselves and happily forging an idea that is so very selfish in itself by forgetting about ‘sustainability’? Because both can’t go hand in hand one has to sacrifice for another. Forget about sacrificing because it’s on a larger time scale and survival rate of everything drops to zero on a larger scale of time. Firstly it’s very much about ourselves, can we be so hedonistic and pleasure seeking that we have no high morals and duties left?
This concept has grown because we think that this is an ‘age of reason’. A famous philosopher said that, how can we believe that the god is not deceiving us, so going by that way how can we believe that the reason of ourselves is so very reasonable that we must go for it putting aside everything. Because if you said that god also can deceive you then why can’t your very own reason?
This concept of utilitarianism basically have a presumption that man is rational being and take decisions based on reason. But this is not seen everywhere, in fact, people are more inclined towards emotions and passions when it comes to decision-making. They are not reasonable all the times if not most of the times because of their personal interests attached with the final outcomes and final decisions. So why this concept is practised if the main presumption behind this concept is not practical? Are we not seeing what we should see or we are seeing what we shouldn’t? Is there a need for absenting the present and presenting the absent? And if answer is yes, then definitely this is not the way. This unfelt, unseen and un-noticed veil before our eyes can make us permanently blind. It’s the time we should take medication before things go really out of control.
